Carta vs AngelList: API, MCP and investor access compared

Both serve venture funds with fund administration, an LP portal and a vendor MCP server. This page sets the two registry entries side by side: how investors log in, whether an API or MCP server exists and for whom, what files can be exported, and what the terms say about automation.

"Not documented" and "Unknown" mean the researchers found no public statement either way, not that the feature is missing.

Key differences

  • API. Carta: partner only (REST, OAuth 2 authorization code and OAuth 2 client credentials, for GP and partner users, public docs, sandbox). AngelList: planned (GraphQL, for GP and partner users).
  • SFTP. Carta: partner only. AngelList: not offered.
  • Investor-side API. The assessment records access for the investor as unknown for Carta and not offered for AngelList.
  • Capabilities. Listed for AngelList only: NAV.
  • Export formats. Listed for AngelList only: CSV.
  • Regions. Listed for Carta only: Europe.
  • Asset classes. Listed for Carta only: Private equity.
  • MFA methods. AngelList lists: authenticator app; none recorded for Carta.
  • Known deployments. The registry links 1 known deployment to Carta and 0 to AngelList. This counts what the community has documented, not market share.

What the entries have in common

  • MCP server: both are recorded as available (vendor-maintained, endpoint published, Streamable HTTP, OAuth 2).
  • Email notifications: both are recorded as available.
  • Neither entry documents webhooks.
  • Difficulty: both are rated 3 of 5 (exports, SFTP or email feeds, no investor-side API).
  • Standards: both list OAuth 2.
  • Automation policy: unknown for both.

Which fits which need

Neither product is right for every team. The statements below are conditional and come straight from the registry fields above.

For investors and LP operations teams

  • If your investors or your operations team need documents and data through an API, the registry records the API as partner only (aimed at GP and partner users) for Carta and planned for AngelList. Access for the investor itself is recorded as unknown for Carta and not offered for AngelList.
  • If you want to reach the data from an AI assistant, the MCP server is available for both. A vendor MCP server can still be limited to the vendor's direct customers, so read the research notes below for who may sign in.
  • If you process capital call and distribution notices from your inbox, email notifications are available for both.
  • If you load files into your own systems, the registry lists PDF for Carta and PDF and CSV for AngelList.
  • If you plan to automate your own login, automation in the terms is unknown for both. Where it is prohibited or unknown, ask the GP or the vendor for a sanctioned channel first.

For GPs, fund administrators and buyers

  • If you need to connect the product to your back office, Carta records API partner only, webhooks not documented and SFTP partner only; AngelList records API planned, webhooks not documented and SFTP not offered.
  • If the product must carry the core LP reporting items (capital calls, distributions, capital account statements and tax documents), the structured capabilities cover all four for both.
  • If your investors are concentrated in particular markets, the regions recorded are North America, Europe and Global for Carta and North America and Global for AngelList.
  • If you manage a specific strategy, the asset classes recorded are venture capital and private equity for Carta and venture capital for AngelList.
  • If you want to see who already runs each product, the registry documents 1 known deployment for Carta and 0 for AngelList. The portal pages name the operators.
  • If your investors will want programmatic access later, the difficulty rating is 3 of 5 for both, where 1 is a documented self-serve API an investor can use and 5 is web login only with MFA.

What the research says

Carta LP Portal

Assessment. Publicly documented OAuth API with sandbox and a vendor MCP server, both oriented to fund managers and partners. LP access to own commitments via API or MCP unconfirmed. Email notices give a machine-readable trigger.

Research notes. High confidence: public API docs with sandbox, production gated; vendor MCP server with OAuth sign-in. Carta also runs a fund administration service on this platform. Unknown: whether an LP can use the MCP server or an API scope for their own commitments; terms on automation.

  • Web: Single LP login across all funds administered on Carta. 2FA set up at registration; methods not confirmed. Multi-select download of K-1s, capital notices and annual reports.
  • API: Public docs and a mock server; production access requires Carta approval. Suites: Launch, Investor (portfolio cap-table data for fund operators), Issuer, Portfolio, CRM. No LP self-serve path for fund-account data found.
  • MCP: Vendor remote MCP server, Anthropic-verified connector since May 2026. Tools include discover, fetch, list_accounts, cap_table_chart. Fund performance and accounting data for investors are mentioned; documents and capital calls are not. LP coverage unconfirmed.
  • SFTP: Only for the separate Carta LP Portfolio Analytics product (formerly Accelex).
  • Email: Capital call notices emailed from investor-notices@carta.com with a link into the portal.
  • Terms: Terms page returned HTTP 403 to the researcher.

AngelList (Venture)

Assessment. Vendor MCP server (AngelList Link) exposes documents, capital calls, distributions and capital accounts read-only but only to GPs; LPs limited to web (optional TOTP 2FA) with PDF/CSV tax exports; LP MCP and API announced as planned.

Research notes. Confidence: high on GP-only MCP server (vendor page angellist.com/link, help article on Link data & privacy, Claude marketplace listing). High on LP web features (help center: tax docs PDF/CSV, authenticator 2FA). Investor-side (LP) programmatic access: none today; AngelList states LP support planned. Terms page (venture.angellist.com/terms) could not be read (JS shell); automation policy unknown. Distinguish: MCP/API = GP audience; LP = web + email only.

  • Web: Optional 2FA via authenticator app with downloadable recovery codes (help center). LPs see Taxes and Documents tab; tax statements exportable as PDF or CSV.
  • API: GP side: AngelList Link page says 'API access planned for later this year' (2026). Separate GraphQL 'Investor Management API' / Data Room API exists for AngelList's Data Room and Digital Subscriptions products (GP/fund-ops customers; set up via portal@angellist.com; docs.angellist.com is auth-gated). No LP-facing API.
  • MCP: AngelList Link (launched 2026-07-23): read-only, 28 tools (capital accounts, capital calls, distributions, documents, financial statements, partners, closes, subscriptions). Available to GPs and their teams only; LPs explicitly not yet supported ('LP use cases later'). Listed in Claude connector marketplace as verified. Not in official MCP registry.
  • Webhooks: Data Room API pushes activity events (GP product).
  • Email: LPs receive email for capital calls, statements and updates.
